Microsoft announced at MIX ‘09 on March 18 the release of Silverlight 3 beta. One can download the release from here. Some of the new features that Silverlight will bring in this new release include support for H.264 format, new hardware accelerated graphics and animation features, better search engine optimization and out of browser support.
The out of browser support will allow the Silverlight based applications to run online, with intermittently connected access or offline. This feature is similar to the Adobe AIR product, but Microsoft says that their version of out of browser execution has advantages over Adobe AIR, in the sense that it doesn’t require an additional installation and that the packet size is smaller (among other things).
Some question if in this way, Silverlight puts an end to WPF… Regarding this question, Brad Becker, a Microsoft Group Product Manager for User Experience and Tools said that unlike WPF apps, which are fully integrated with the desktop and hardware, Silverlight apps run in a protected sandbox environment that isolates them from the base OS.
More information regarding this can be found on Mary-Jo Foley’s blog.
