Search

While reading some things on the Live Search blog, I came across a very interesting EntityCube which is a site informing us about some of the things that are going on in Microsoft Research related to search. Two particular projects sparkled my interest: EntityCube itself, but also Libra Academic Search.

EntityCube is a project that promises to flatten the internet when it comes to an individual into a single line, such that one can easily find out all the information regarding a particular person available on the internet from a single place. Now, some could argue that this could make things worse when it comes to privacy and other related things, but I would also like to state that in the end, it only displays information that is already on the internet… Bellow are the main objectives of the project as presented on the project’s site:

  • A biography page for a person
  • A social-network graph for a person
  • A shortest-relationship path between two people
  • All titles of a person that are found on the Web
  •

Libra Academic Search is a project that simplifies the search for publications by providing pointers to related papers, automatically searching and grouping them by author and by providing some other very interesting features. The main objectives of the project as presented on the project’s site are presented bellow:

  • Find top scientists, conferences, and journals in a specific field
  • Witness the growth and evolution of research communities
  • Locate top research papers
  • Identify rising stars or hot topics in your field
  •

I really look forward to see the final outcome of these projects and to get a better chance to use them.
