TFS 2008 and Windows Server 2008 x64

Ξ March 16th, 2008 | → 6 Comments | ∇ Tools and technologies |

Due to some strange course of events, I finally decided to update the software on my server and to install the Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition RTM on it(previously beta 1 32 bit edition was installed on it). Due to the fact that the server has a 64 bit processor, I have decided to go for the 64 bit editions of the software. I downloaded Team Foundation Server 2008 image. Next I downloaded the 64 bit edition of Windows Server 2008. Meanwhile, Cretz backed up the files on the server and prepared for the new install. Having all the required software (we already had SQL Server 2005 x64 Developer Edition) we started the install process. All went well until we had to install TFS (the very last step), when, just after starting the setup, we got a very nice message, informing us that TFS 2008 does not support this OS (Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64). After a quick search on the Internet, we found out that the x64 Edition of Windows Server 2008 is not supported. What was really interesting was the fact that we had no clue that Windows Server 2008 x64 was not supported, and after reading more on the Internet, users complained about this aspect too. The main issue was generated by the fact that this is not specified in the TSF 2008 documentation. So far, Windows Server 2008 x64 is not supported and there is no plan of supporting it in SP 1 either. The official statement advises users to use Windows Server x86 version.

So, what do you suggest as an alternative then? deploy on multiple tiers? create a VM image?

I would suggest going with the supported version, which is, using the x86 versions of the software. That is always the safest choice. If this is not possible or desirable, then try to deploy it on a virtual machine and use the steps provided on the following link for installation: http://blogs.msdn.com/lakhminder/archive/2009/02/17/tfs-wss-x64-installation-issue.aspx . Hope this helps.

Also, using multiple tiers is another valid alternative to the plain x86 bit one. We didn’t use this alternative since we’ve decided that the x86 version will work for us, but one can deploy on a multi-tier environment in order to have SQL Server on a x64 bit OS and TFS on x86 one. This might actually be a better choice since you can take advantage of the x64 version of SQL Server.

OMFG …. i just did the exact same thing : went through the (painfull) install procedure for TFS2008, just to discover at the last step that x64 OS’s are not supported … what a waste of my time !
