As I tried to search something on the web today, I was puzzled to see that something was different. I usually use Live Search to find my way through the web, but this morning things were different. At first I thought that I had some sort of malware program that changed my default search engine in IE, or that I installed some software that changed it. I double checked it, but things were ok on that side. Next, I tried to find other clues on what might have happened and I turned my attention back to the search engine page. Microsoft announced at MIX ‘09 on March 18 the release of Silverlight 3 beta. One can download the release from here. Some of the new features that Silverlight will bring in this new release include support for H.264 format, new hardware accelerated graphics and animation features, better search engine optimization and out of browser support.

While reading some things on the Live Search blog, I came across a very interesting EntityCube which is a site informing us about some of the things that are going on in Microsoft Research related to search. Two particular projects sparkled my interest: EntityCube itself, but also Libra Academic Search.

Today I have noticed that the SSL certificates for several web sites have expired. Although this does not necessary involve that the communication between the client and the server is insecure, it can be a perfect opportunity for several parties to launch phishing attacks against those particular sites.

Well, I’ve just read on the yahoo messenger blog that the team decided to cut the Vista version of Yahoo Messenger from further development in order to provide a unified feel for all their users. I don’t know if this was a good or bad decision, but I can tell you that I was really looking forward to that release. I did install the beta version on my PC and I liked what I saw, though I must admit that it was a bit slow and this was the main reason that kept me from using it.

Apparently there are some errors with certificates on the Imagine Cup site. While trying to enter it, I came across this very nice warning telling me that the certificate used on the site was not issued by a trusted authority. While this was a temporary issue with the site(that seems to have been corrected by now), I still wonder why did this issue appear. (more…)
